In this webinar we will be reviewing the role of host and the microbiome in the pathobiology of IBD and provide an overview of the epidemiology of the disease in pediatric patients and why phenotyping disease is important for therapy.  We will be discussing how the fecal microbiome is complex and biologically important, ie dysbiosis in a number of diseases, in particular IBD.  We will also be reviewing the diagnostic approach to the pediatric patient with suspected IBD and the methods for assessing treatment success including the importance of fecal calprotectin in diagnosis and monitoring outcomes.  Finally we will provide a brief overview of both the pharmacological and nutritional approach to pediatric IBD treatment.

Learning Objectives:

• Review basic immuno-pathobiology of IBD and the phenotypes of IBD or IBDs - Crohn’s, Ulcerative Colitis and Indeterminate Colitis
• Briefly describe the epidemiology of IBD in children
• Describe the diagnostic testing for IBD in the pediatric patient
• Use of fecal biomarker(s), calprotectin for diagnosis and treatment monitoring
• Outline approaches to treatment of IBD in children; and why these approaches might work, and why fecal calprotectin is an optimal tool to assess outcomes
