Biofriendly Drug Design for Neurological Diseases

WRITTEN BY: Nouran Amin

Carbon quantum dots are a class of nanoparticles that can be placed to good use for treating neurodegenerative diseases or so indicated by scientists at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). The study, titled "Untangling the Potential of Carbon Quantum Dots in Neurodegenerative Disease," shows the potential of carbon quantum dots in developing biofriendly protein syntheses and drug delivery.

"The carbonaceous quanta are finally making their way from physics into chemistry and now, biology," says Prakash Narayan, vice president of preclinical research for Angion Biomedica Corp. in Uniondale, New York. "This work lays the foundation for harnessing the enormous potential of carbon quantum dots for therapeutic intervention in neuro disease."

The study published in the journal Processes was the first to report on carbon quantum dots for neurotherapeutics.

"This will allow pharmaceutical companies to tailor carbon quantum dots for specific uses," adds Mahesh Narayan, study co-author and assistant professor and professor, respectively, in UTEP's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. "Individuals with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's could benefit greatly from this kind of therapy."
