Antibiotic Resistance - A Global Health Threat

WRITTEN BY: Liat Ben-Senior

Antibiotics play a critical role in fighting off bacterial infections. Since the discovery of the first antibiotic, Penicillin, antibiotic treatment became an effective and safe tool which is routinely used to fight infectious diseases in many medical and dental procedures. They help improve the quality of life, mortality rates and even eradicate some of the fatal infectious diseases in developing countries. However, in recent years, there is a growing concern due to the emergence of antibiotics resistant bacteria strains which render antibiotic treatment ineffective. Antibiotics overuse and misuse is the leading cause of antibiotic resistance and is the biggest threat to global health.  Decreasing inappropriate antibiotic use is a crucial strategy to control antibiotic resistance.
