Next Big Thing For Cannabis Users: Sublingual Strips?

WRITTEN BY: C Reardon

Aleafia Health signed an agreement with Kinstate, Inc. allowing the company to manufacture, market, and sell Kin Slips and the technology behind these cannabis-infused sublingual strips to both the Canadian medical and adult-use cannabis markets. To date, Kin Slips are sold in over 100 retail outlets in the state of California.

Kin Slips claims to provide consumers with an easily consumed, smoke-free cannabis option. Sublingual administration means the product is placed under the tongue to be absorbed and dissolved into the bloodstream through the mucous membranes.

The company’s website suggests that these sublingual slips are often more predictable than edibles as a result of the inconsistency of the chemical conversion that occurs in the stomach and liver during digestion.

“When you consume an edible, your body goes to work, breaking it down in your digestive system and liver. This journey is known as First Pass Metabolism. Along the way, some of the ∆9-THC is metabolized into 11-Hydroxy-THC, a psychoactive relative of ∆9-THC. 11-Hydroxy-THC has been shown to cause more psychoactive effects than ∆9-THC, which is why people become more uneasy from edibles than other consumption methods,” explains Kin Slips on their official website.

Additionally, the varying speeds and efficacies of an individual’s digestive tract are influenced by many factors, including diet and metabolic rate, meaning that edibles can have different effects on the body from day-to-day.
