If you’re like me, then you probably hate it when flies land on your food. But why is it such a big deal anyway?

When flies land on your food, it’s because they like what they smell and they’re hungry. Flies don’t have teeth to chew what you’re munching on, so they regurgitate on your food after landing on it to liquefy the surface before they can ‘drink’ it up.

Apart from dealing with fly spit on your delicious outdoor lunch, keep in mind that flies are particularly gross and forage through trash cans for food; this means that flies land on several unsanitary surfaces like rotting meat and feces before flying over to your lunch and landing on it.

In summary, fly spit doesn’t seem all that bad when you stop to consider all the different kinds of bacteria that the insects carry from their dumpster-diving trip(s) before landing on your food. But overall, it’s best to keep flies away from your food whenever possible.
