Sifaka Lemurs Endure Dangerous Ventures to Find Food

WRITTEN BY: Anthony Bouchard

Sifaka lemurs exist in families of such large numbers, that even an entire cluster of massive trees isn’t fruitful enough to sustain them. For this reason, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that these animals continuously search for prime real estate in an attempt to meet their family’s needs, both in terms of food availability.

In this video, a mother and her son are compelled to search for a new pocket of vegetation that can support their family. There’s no telling how far away the next ideal patch of trees might be. At best, it will only be a few meters away, but at worst, it can be hundreds of meters away. Given the possibility of such a vast distance, they waste no time.

Amid their search, they find themselves at a cliffside comprised of profusely sharp limestone shards. To get to the top of the mountain, they’ll need to climb these shards, many of which stretch hundreds of meters in the air. With few safe gripping points, it would be an understatement to call these Sifaka lemurs daredevils, but it’s something they must do to survive.

Fortunately for the Sifaka lemurs, their bodies have evolved to cope with this type of environment. While the sharp limestone would easily slice through human flesh, the lemurs’ rubbery footpads give them a durability advantage, and they even have springy legs that enable them to leap from one surface to another safely.

These Sifakas make quick work of their treacherous journey, eventually finding their way safely to the other side of the cliff to claim their tasty vegetation. It looks like they’ll get live another day after all…
