A Common Pathogen: Norovirus

You’ve probably heard of noroviruses before; they're a highly contagious and diverse group of viruses that are sometimes in the news when large numbers of people become infected with some strain of it on cruise ships, in healthcare clinics, daycare centers or schools. While it’s not related to influenza, it’s sometimes called the stomach flu, or might be called a stomach bug because of the symptoms it causes (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach pain). Infected individuals may also get a fever or headache. 

The illness spreads very easily. It usually comes on within 48 hours of exposure to the virus, and often resolves in about three days or less. An infected individual can contaminate food, drinks, or surfaces, and easily transmit the illness to others. Learn more from the video.
