Thousands of Pounds of Ground Turkey are Recalled

WRITTEN BY: Carmen Leitch

A nationwide recall of ground turkey has been announced; Butterball, Kroger, and Food Lion are recalling around 78,164 pounds of the ground meat because it may be contaminated with Salmonella contamination. The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) at the US Department of Agriculture has issued a Class-I recall of four Butterball, one Food Lion and one Kroger products. The labels from the recalled products can be found here.

While these items were produced in July 2018, FSIS is concerned that consumers may still have the meat in their freezers.

When food contaminated with Salmonella is not properly cooked, and it’s then ingested, it can cause a common illness - salmonellosis. The illness often resolves on its own but can cause abdominal cramping, fever, and diarrhea for around a week. It can be far more severe in people with weakened immune systems, like infants and the elderly.
