The John P. Wyatt, M.D. Traveling Fellowship 2021 Symposium

Join us as we hear from KEYNOTE speaker Howard Frumkin, MD, DrPH, on “Planetary Health: Human Well-Being on a Fast-Changing Planet.” Howard Frumkin, an internist, occupational and environmental medicine specialist, and epidemiologist, is Professor Emeritus of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington School of Public Health in Seattle, where he served as Dean from 2010 to 2016.

After Dr. Howard Fumkin's presentation, a Panel will present on "Environmental health disparities at the national, regional, and local level" and breakout sessions (available at 2:05pm EDT and at 2:25pm EDT) showcasing environment research and action will follow!

The John P. Wyatt, M.D. Traveling Fellowship 2021 Symposium honors the legacy of Dr. John Wyatt, a pulmonologist who over 50 years ago connected environment with disease. His pioneering environmental clinical research will be honored on Earth Day.

  • KEYNOTE Speaker: Howard Frumkin, M.D., DR.P.H.
    Professor Emeritus, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, University of Washington School of Public Health
    Biography

      Howard Frumkin, an internist, occupational and environmental medicine specialist, and epidemiologist, is Professor Emeritus of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington School of Public Health in Seattle, where he served as Dean from 2010 to 2016.  His other positions have included serving as head of the “Our Planet, Our Health” initiative at the Wellcome Trust in London (2018-19), as Director of the National Center for Environmental Health and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR) at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and as Special Assistant to the CDC Director for Climate Change and Health (2005-2010), and as Professor and Chair of Environmental and Occupational Health at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health and Professor of Medicine at Emory Medical School (1995-2010). Dr. Frumkin's research interests include public health aspects of the built environment, climate change, energy policy, nature contact, and sustainability.

    • Heather Henry, Ph.D.
      Health Scientist Administrator. National Institute of Environmental Health Science
      Biography

        Dr. Heather Henry is an environmental scientist with over 20 years' experience in research and technology transfer of innovative environmental technologies to improve sustainability and cost effectiveness of environmental site assessment and remediation. She is a Health Scientist Administrator at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and part of the Superfund Research Program (SRP), a federal environmental and health research grant program. She manages a portfolio of innovative toxicology, site monitoring, and remediation grants to US universities and small businesses. She also communicates and translates program successes to a variety of stakeholders: academic, industry, community, and federal/state end-users. She serves on several working groups including Federal Remediation Technology Forum, National Nanotechnology Initiative Water Sustainability, NIH COVID-19: Wastewater Surveillance, NIEHS Emerging Contaminants, NIEHS Disaster Research Response and NIEHS One Health. Heather studied environmental remediation and ecological restoration for her BS at the University of Rochester, PhD at the University of Cincinnati, and as a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Melbourne and University of Adelaide in Australia.

      • Amanda LeFevre
        Deputy Commissioner, Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection
        Biography

          Amanda LeFevre serves as Deputy Commissioner for the Department from Environmental Protection. She previously served as the Director of the Division of Compliance Assistance (DCA). Amanda specialized in enhancing the educational offerings in DCA and its programs which include compliance assistance, brownfield and the state's environmental leadership program, KY EXCEL. She serves as the Chair of the Association of State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials' Brownfield Focus Group and the Vice Chair of the CERCLA and Brownfields Subcommittee. Amanda earned a bachelor's from Brescia University and a master's in Public Administration from the University of Kentucky. She is a Kentucky native originally from Falls of Rough, Ky.

        • Donovan Taylor, J.D., MBA
          Manager, The Plan Room & West End community resident
          Biography

            Donovan C. Taylor is a motivated professional with over fifthteen (15) years of combined management experience in business and tax strategies, law and legal practices, and community organizing and development.  Mr. Taylor's education includes a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Business Management and Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree from Florida A&M University as well as a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law.  Mr. Taylor currently serves as the manager of The Plan Room, a non-profit business accelerator focusing on capacity building for minority-owned contractors, subcontractors, architects, design firms, and suppliers in the construction industry.

            Mr. Taylor is a proud resident of the West End community in Louisville, Kentucky, where he is committed to using his personal and professional skills for community improvement.  He is actively involved with many community organizations providing direct address to various matters impacting the area.  In particular, Mr. Taylor works with the Chickasaw Neighborhood Federation, Rubbertown Emergency Action (ReACT), and the West Jefferson County Community Task Force to address area pollution concerns,  Mr. Taylor is recognized for collaborating with other community groups and stakeholders to advance neighborhood-based initiatives.

          About the John P. Wyatt, M.D. Traveling Fellowship

          This fellowship honors Dr. John P. Wyatt, M.D., who was director of the University of Kentucky Tobacco and Health Research Institute from 1974 until January 1980. Dr. Wyatt was a pathologist who received his M.D. from the University of Manitoba in 1938 and completed his medical training on a fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Before coming to UK in 1974, he was professor and head of the departments of pathology at the University of Manitoba and St. Louis University where he was involved in black lung research. Dr. Wyatt was a pulmonary diseases researcher who published over 100 articles covering viruses and diverse lung injuries. The John P. Wyatt, M.D. Traveling Fellowship is awarded biennially.

          About the Fellowship Awardee

          Dr. Erin Haynes, 2020 John. P. Wyatt, M.D. Traveling Fellowship Awardee, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology in the UK College of Public Health, Interim Chair of the Department of Prevention Medicine and Environmental Health, and Interim Deputy Director of the UK Center for Appalachian Research in Environmental Sciences.
