Abstract

Adjuvant discovery is largely devoted toward the development of vaccines meant to elicit prophylactic humoral immunity.  While useful against infectious diseases, this mode of adaptive immunity is generally insufficient for promoting therapeutic immunity against chronic diseases and cancer. Therapeutic intervention requires the generation of robust cellular immunity, a challenge that requires a change in our approach to the use of adjuvants and our approach to adjuvants and vaccination.  This talk with address the need for T cells in successful therapeutic intervention in cancer, the capacity of vaccines to generate the frequency of T cells needed, and changes to vaccine adjuvant design and delivery that could be implemented to augment vaccine-elicited cellular immunity.

Learning objectives:

1. Demonstrate understand for the immunological demands for eliciting cellular immunity appropriate for therapeutic intervention.

2. Recognize current approaches to adjuvant-elicited cellular immunity.

3. Identify biological and practical considerations for improving the use of adjuvants in therapeutic intervention.
