Antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infections are on the rise causing approximately 1.3M deaths each year due to patients succumbing to usually treatable infections which however no longer respond to antibiotic therapy. This presentation focuses on the impact and prevention of nosocomial pathogen transmissions causing healthcare associate infections (HAI). Mounting evidence suggests that standard of care testing in clinical microbiology is detecting HAI outbreak too late or not at all, leading to poor patient outcomes and excess cost to the hospital or healthcare provider. Pathogen whole genome sequencing (WGS) is rapidly emerging as an alternative to standard of care testing for early outbreak detection and the identification, typing and functional characterization of AMR pathogens. The method is already well established for public health outbreak surveillance, and recent studies demonstrate the clinical utility of WGS. Yet, adoption of WGS into healthcare routine is slow and hampered by cost and limited capacity. This webinar will review the literature on patient and economic benefits of routine WGS surveillance in healthcare settings and cover recent advances lowering the burden of adopting WGS into clinical microbiology.
Learning Objectives
  • Identify the impact of healthcare associated infections on patients and healthcare providers.
  • Discover the patient- and healthcare economic benefits of WGS for routine hospital surveillance.
  • Explain how recent advances in technology and new WGS solutions can facilitate the technology’s adoption for routine us in clinical microbiology.
Webinars will be available for unlimited on-demand viewing after live event.
