Ann Milne has been with the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary since 1993. She started her career as a Biomedical Scientist in the Pathology department after graduating from the Robert Gordon University with a bachelor’s degree of applied science. After switching to the Department of Clinical Biochemistry in 1999, Ann started her master program in 2004 in Biomedical Science. She graduated in 2007, right when she took over the role as the Chief Biomedical Scientist in her department. Recently Ann was promoted to the Biochemistry Laboratory Manager. In her new position Ann is using her long experience in the department to address challenges caused by an ever-changing environment and has found that, together with excellent people management skills, automation is one of her greatest allies. Her exceptional view on how a laboratory should generate value in each step of the process fits perfectly with her plans of getting ahead of the automation curve.

Paul Drew, Senior Chief Biomedical Scientist and Hematology Laboratory Manager at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary has worked in and managed Medical Laboratories through multiple decades. Paul finished his ONC and the HC in Medical Laboratory Science before finishing his tertiary education in 1988 by obtaining the W. H. Carnie Award for his achievements in the Fellowship of Hematology examination. His dedication to the field and to excellent management is reflected in his multiple certifications from varying institutions, including the Certificate in Managing Safely from the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health and the Professional Certificate in Management from The Open University. Throughout the years Paul has helped to structure and develop the way the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary approaches challenges. The need to change and reinvent the way Hematology testing is done over the years lead him to become an expert on today’s far more automated working environment.
