    Biography

      Dr. Marianne Leruez-Ville specializes in Clinical Virology and holds a PHD in Virology. Dr. Leruez-Ville is a consultant and the head of the Virology laboratory of Necker-Hospital for sick children in Paris, France.  She is currently the director of the congenital CMV laboratory within the French National Reference Center for Herpes Viruses.  Dr. Leruez-Ville belongs to a research group focusing on fetal abnormalities and their treatment (EA 7328, Imagine Institute, University of Paris).  Her main research interest is clinical virology in relation to congenital CMV infection.

      Biography

        Tiziana Lazzarotto is a professor of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology at the Department of Specialised, Experimental and Diagnostic Medicine at the University of Bologna (Italy), School of Medicine. In addition, Tiziana is also Head of the Laboratory of Virology at the Operative Unit of Clinical Microbiology at St. Orsola Polyclinic, Bologna and Director of the Post-graduate school of Microbiology and Virology at the University of Bologna School of Medicine.Tiziana has made significant contributions in the study of viral infections, specifically on the pre and postnatal diagnosis of congenital CMV and Rubella infections and the management of CMV and EBV infections in solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients.Professor Lazzarotto is a member of the managing committee for the Italian Society for Clinical Microbiology (AMCLI) and a founding member of the European Congenital CMV Initiative (ECCI) – a European group founded to devise and implement concrete actions to deal with the problems linked to congenital CMV infection.

      Congenital CMV is the most frequent infectious cause of neonatal malformation in developed nations. Yet, this disease is largely under-recognized by health authorities and the general public. There is now a global movement to improve awareness, prevention and diagnosis to reduce the impact and burden of this disease.

      In light of this, congenital CMV diagnostic algorithms have garnered much discussion in the medical science community. Both universal newborn screening and targeted testing have been proposed and explored, with each approach having its own advantages.

      This two part presentation will provide an update on universal screening and targeted screening for neonates as well as a discussion on different specimen sample types and their respective clinical utility, which can impact on the overall clinical diagnosis.
