Abstract

Hematology and coagulation laboratories perform a wide range of routine and specialized tests for the screening, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of hematological disorders.

Advances in technology, together with the variety of tests being performed in each area of the laboratory, mean that healthcare scientists are now able to deliver better information.  Abnormalities seen in hematology testing might have significant clinical impact in coagulation testing.

In this webinar, Dr. Smith will discuss three cases that share abnormal findings across both disciplines.  These abnormal findings, taken together, aid in an enhanced diagnosis to help the clinician deliver improved patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the pathogenesis of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL), Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) and Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP)

  • Review the hematological profile of APL, CLL and TTP cases

  • Outline mechanisms associated with the coagulopathy in APL, CLL, and TTP

  • Describe the need for both hematology and coagulation in the diagnoses of APL, CLL and TTP
