Diagnosis and Management of Viral Infections in the Transplant Population

Speaker

Event Date & Time

DATE: July 17, 2019
TIME: 9:00am PDT

Abstract

Viral infections, including those caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and BK virus (BKV) are an important cause of morbidity and mortality among transplant recipients. Recent advances in laboratory testing for these viruses have enhanced our ability to rapidly diagnose and manage these infections. Specifically, molecular testing allows healthcare providers to diagnose patients with viral infections, monitor their response to antiviral treatment, and potentially predict the most effective management strategies. In this webinar, Dr. Matt Binnicker (Director of Clinical Virology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN) will highlight the clinical impact of viral infections in the transplant population and provide an overview of the laboratory methods that are available to assist in the diagnosis and management of these infections. Using a case-based approach, Dr. Binnicker will discuss the importance of using standardized protocols and assays, review the limitations and challenges associated with current diagnostic methods, and introduce future techniques, including the use of next-generation sequencing for determination of antiviral resistance.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define the potential clinical manifestations of infection with CMV, EBV and BK virus in the transplant population.
  • Review the available laboratory methods that are used in the diagnosis and management of viral infections among transplant recipients.
  • Discuss the advantages and limitations of various assays, and highlight key considerations for their appropriate use and interpretation.
  • Introduce future tests that may allow providers to predict a patient’s response to certain antiviral medications.

Webinars will be available for unlimited on-demand viewing after live event.
