Evaluation of MICRONAUT-S Anaerobes MIC broth microdilution panels with a large collection of clinical samples

    Biography

      Miriam Cordovana recently joined the R&D team of the Business Area Microbiology and Diagnostics of Bruker Daltonik GmbH, as a scientist for methods development. With a Master’s degree in Molecular Biology, she gained considerable experience at the Microbiology Unit, Careggi Hospital, Florence (2004-2005) and the Human genetic laboratory, University of Florence (2005-2007), both in Italy. In her previous role (2007-2020) at the Bacteriology section, Unit of Microbiology, University Hospital Sant’Orsola-Malpighi, Bologna (Italy) she was passionate about antibiotic resistances, being author/co-author of several scientific publications in this challenging field.

    Susceptibility profiles of anaerobes to antimicrobials have become unpredictable, thus reliable and user-friendly methods for routine susceptibility testing are increasingly needed. The MICRONAUT-S Anaerobes MIC test plate is a commercially available broth microdilution method, suitable for routine clinical microbiology testing. We analyzed a collection of 300 consecutive relevant clinical isolates, including 149 gram-positive and 151 gram-negative strains. The performance of the MICRONAUT-S Anaerobes MIC plate was compared to that of a gradient diffusion method (our laboratory standard), calculating the categorical and essential agreement, as well as the discrepancy rate. All the strains included in this study (with the exception of 1 Porphyromonas isolate) successfully grew in the MICRONAUT-S Anaerobes MIC plate (73% after 24 h of incubation). Overall, essential and category agreements resulted in >95% and >97% respectively, and only a low rate of errors was observed. Beyond the very good analytical performance, several technical advantages in comparison with the gradient diffusion method were observed, that contribute to make the MICRONAUT-S Anaerobes panels suitable for an easy implementation into laboratory routine.
