Wastewater-based surveillance is valuable as it allows for the detection of pathogens before symptomatic cases are identified.
In Korea, wastewater surveillance has been implemented, and the detection of various pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, has been confirmed. To simultaneously detect multiple pathogens, TaqMan Array Cards (TAC) have been introduced and proven to be highly useful in wastewater surveillance. Although wastewater surveillance has its limitations, it has proven to be a valuable adjunct to existing surveillance systems and should be further established as a reliable monitoring system through standardization of detection methods and quality assurance
Learning Objectives
- What is Infectious Disease Surveillance System?
- How to effectively monitor various pathogens
- Case studies on Wastewater-Based Epidemiology (WBE) of COVID-19 & imported pathogens in Korea.
