    Biography
      Wesley Thompson is the Microbiology Research and Development Group Leader at Q Laboratories in Cincinnati, Ohio. Prior to this, He was the Microbiology Technology Leader at Q Laboratories, Inc. in Cincinnati, Ohio since 2017. For the past 10 years, Wesley has worked in both the Food and GMP fields of microbiology of the independent third-party laboratory and now has a primary focus on providing high quality method validations for microbiological rapid detection methods. These validations include Independent laboratory evaluations for pathogen detection, qualitative methods and confirmatory biochemical assays for AOAC Official Methods of Analysis, AOAC Research Institute Performance Tested Methods Program, MicroVal and AFNOR NF Certification Programs. In addition to his role as Group Leader, he continues to aid in the advancement of new methods and technologies into Q Laboratories. Wesley earned a B.S. from Mount Saint Joseph University.

    Identification and confirmation of microbial isolates is crucial in the analysis workflow, providing decision-makers the information required to release or hold products. Despite the difficulties in establishing a coherent definition for bacterial species and the long time-to-results, phenotypic and biochemical tests are still widely used and recognized. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry has significantly changed the identification procedure and has to be extensively validated following AOAC and ISO 16140-6 guidelines. The Bruker MALDI Biotyper® is now regarded as a reliable and accurate alternative to quickly identify or routinely confirm systematic perspectives. Contract laboratories are beginning to adopt the Bruker MALDI Biotyper® as an efficient and effective alternative for identification and confirmation analysis in a routine laboratory setting.
