An overview of primary immune deficiency disorders (PID) and laboratory testing for PID
Primary immune deficiencies (PIDs), otherwise known as inborn errors of immunity, are a group of disorders in which a portion of the immune system is missing or is not functioning properly. PIDs result in enhanced susceptibility to infection, often with organisms of low pathogenicity. Additionally, PIDs increase susceptibility to autoimmunity and malignancy. While severe presentations of PID are more readily recognized and referred to tertiary centers for follow up and treatment, more subtle manifestations of PIDs may go unrecognized and untreated.
In this webinar, Dr. Knight discusses the basic components of the immune system, when to suspect primary immune deficiency and the current classification of immune deficiencies. Dr. Knight will also discuss the general laboratory workup when immune deficiency is suspected and will also elaborate on phenotypic and functional immunological analysis for specific immune disorders.
