In 2010 he was accredited as a LEED Green Associate with US Green Building Council. Before joining Labconco, he was a Laboratory Director for the Institute for Environmental Health Laboratories in Omaha, NE, where he focused on planning and management of two labs in the beef industry, analyzing food-borne pathogens. He is a member of the Controlled Environment Testing Association (CETA) and American Biological Safety Association International (ABSA) and sits on the Joint Committee for NSF/ANSI Standard 49.
    • Biosafety Officer
Matt Anderson is currently the Biosafety Officer at University of Nebraska - Lincoln (UNL) in the Department of Environmental Health and Safety, where he has been since 2009. Prior to that he completed a 1 year post-doctoral fellowship in Biosafety at Washington University in St. Louis. He holds Bachelor's degrees in Biology and Chemistry from Dana College in Blair, NE and a doctorate in Chemical Biology from Washington University in St. Louis. He is a Registered Biosafety Professional through ABSA and he is active in ABSA International and MABioN, the Midwest Area Biosafety Network, currently serving as the Co-Chair of the ABSA International E-communications Committee and as President of MABioN. He has also participated in numerous lab design projects while at UNL ranging from new chemistry teaching labs to biological research labs, to a high containment, Animal Biosafety Level 3 lab.

Laboratory science is a risky business – but much of that risk can be mitigated. By communicating the best information to the correct people at the right time, a lab’s design can go a long way in enhancing its operations. Drawing from his experience with a recent construction project, Matt Anderson, a University Biosafety Officer, will share what worked and what did not at the University of Nebraska’s Veterinary Diagnostic Center. Brian Garrett, Product Manager at Labconco, will present the equipment vendor’s perspective. He will discuss the importance of good communication and selecting equipment that functions for today and tomorrow’s needs.

      Learning Objectives:

      1. Develop a deeper understanding of what makes a lab safe
      2. Be able to identify and avoid traps in lab design and renovations
      3. Apply concepts in flexibility to overcome lab design hurdles
