Time: 10:00 AM (PDT), 1:00 PM (EDT)
Abstract

Dr. Prince will provide an overview of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), including the distinctions between HSV-1 and HSV-2, their anatomical sites of infection, and the mechanisms underlying viral infection and reactivation. The presentation will explore key factors influencing the transmission of genital HSV, such as viral shedding, immune response, and behavioral aspects. Diagnostic methods for HSV identification will be discussed, with a focus on type-specific HSV IgG testing for differentiating between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections. Additionally, Dr. Prince will review the importance of confirmatory testing for HSV-2 IgG screen-positive serum samples to ensure diagnostic accuracy. The session will conclude with a discussion on advancements and future directions in HSV IgG testing.

Learning Objectives
  • List the two main factors responsible for transmission of genital herpes infections
  • Name three reasons why it is important to measure type-specific Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) IgG antibodies
  • Explain why confirmation of HSV2 IgG screen-positive samples is needed
  • Describe the two most common confirmatory assays currently available
