    Biography

      Dr. Lawrence de Koning is an Associate Professor at the University of Calgary and Clinical Biochemist with Alberta Precision Laboratories. He directs the pediatric clinical biochemistry testing laboratory at Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Dr. de Koning’s clinical interests are in pediatric clinical biochemistry as it relates to the acute and chronic care of children with cardiac, metabolic and endocrine disorders. His research interests are in laboratory quality improvement and in the epidemiology of childhood and adult conditions with significant morbidity and mortality.


    Abstract

    Patient laboratory test results are significantly over-represented in electronic medical records, but significantly under-utilized in research. An important application of laboratory data is to help improve laboratory testing and operational processes in order to benefit patient care. In this presentation, Dr. de Koning will review several laboratory data-based quality improvement initiatives and the resulting benefit to patients. Dr. de Koning will also review how laboratory data can be used to develop and validate patient risk scores for clinical decision support.

    1. Understand several applications of laboratory data to quality improvement studies

    2. Describe how laboratory data should be processed and analyzed in order to create prognostic risk scores
