Abstract
Description:
Join this webinar to learn how capillary electrophoresis (CE) complements sequencing technologies, such as next generation sequencing, that are being used by cancer researchers today. Additionally, Dr Somak Roy, of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, will describe why he has chosen capillary electrophoresis for his clinical testing research.

Part 1:
Steve Jackson of Thermo Fisher Scientific will give a look at capillary electrophoresis and its application in today’s lab and how it complements other genetic analysis technologies. Plus, he will review the fragment analysis workflow, key benefits, and use of this flexible approach.

Part 2:
Title: Utility of fragment analysis in the era of NGS-based translational research and clinical molecular diagnostics

Speaker:Dr. Somak Roy, MD, Associate Professor, Division of Pathology, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Director of Molecular and Genomic Pathology Services

Abstract:
Clinical validation of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)-based test is a complex process involving the development and optimization of wet-lab methods, bioinformatics pipelines, and result interpretation and reporting protocols. Large and complex insertion and deletion (Indel) variants in key cancer-related genes, such as FLT3, BCOR, and FGFR genes, are critical for the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of patients. However, due to the popular use of short-read sequencing for research and clinical purposes, the detection of large and complex Indel variants is challenging, often resulting in false negative results. Fragment analysis is a simple and cost-effective method to augment the sensitivity of detection of complex Indels and is commonly used for validation of NGS assays as well as real-time orthogonal confirmation. Fragment analysis assays can also be used as standalone assays for fast turnaround time tests. This webinar will highlight the utility of fragment analysis in translational research and oncology molecular diagnostics.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the use of Sanger sequencing and fragment analysis through capillary electrophoresis relative to other sequencing technologies, such as next generation sequencing (NGS).
  • Workflow overview, key features and benefits of fragment analysis.
  • Understand the utility of fragment analysis in translational research oncology molecular diagnostics.
  • Benefits of fragment analysis for detection of large complex Indel variants plus orthogonal confirmation.
