Top Colleges with Cannabis Science Programs

WRITTEN BY: Helaine Krysik

Since there are now a variety of professions that exist within the cannabis industry, it’s no surprise that you can now major in weed in college. As a result, there’s a short list of universities that consistently rank amongst the best ones for studying cannabis, especially if you want to major in the science. These are the schools with the best 4-year degree programs:

Lake Superior State University’s Cannabis Chemistry track: This program in Marie, Michigan was one of the first colleges in the country to focus on the analysis of THC, CBD, terpenes, and other cannabis related compounds.

Northern Michigan University’s Medicinal Plant Chemistry program: Students who enroll in this track learn not only how to grow cannabis, but also how to create medicinal solutions. Additionally, enrollees can choose a business path or an advanced chemistry/biology one.

Minot State University’s Medicinal Plant Chemistry program: Like that of Northern Michigan, this program allows students to study the requisite science, as well as performing 600 hours of lab work as part of the degree track. One unique offering is that students also get to work with hops, in addition to cannabis, enabling students to potentially work in the craft beer industry as well as in cannabis.

Colorado State University’s program in Cannabis Biology & Chemistry: Students will study the essential chemical and biological building blocks that apply to cannabis science. This track can be taken as a BS or as a minor.

Additionally, there are specific for-profit cannabis universities that have sprung up in the past few years. Reviews are mixed as to how quality the programs are, and as to whether studying in those programs helps students land jobs in the field.

If you’re looking for a program, it’s your best bet to study in a traditional, accredited university, where there’s more accountability and the likelihood of quality job placement programs.
