Our oceans are getting more and more acidic - but why? Though the planet's oceans maintained a relatively constant level of acidity almost since the boom of life, research shows that since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the oceans have started absorbing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. While such oceanic absorption of atmospheric carbon dioxide is beneficial in the sense that it has slowed climate change, the oceans are now reaching unsustainable levels of acidity, and it's affecting marine life as we know it. Because changes in water chemistry affect the life cycles of many animals, especially those at the bottom of the food chain, entire ecosystems are now under threat from ocean acidification.
