The LabRoots’ 2019 Fall Scholarship welcomed applications from students around the world, seeking support for research projects, travel expenses, and training supplies associated with their academic pursuits in one of the STEM fields. We would like to congratulate Lana Salloum as this Fall's scholarship winner!
Lana is a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania studying Neuroscience with a minor in Sociology and Healthcare Management. She grew up in Colts Neck, New Jersey with her younger brother and her parents. To further explore her passion for science, she is involved in several activities outside of the classroom regarding the specific fields she loves. This is why she chose to pursue skin cancer research at Penn Med School and is beyond grateful to her lab that supports her on her projects and stimulates her to grow as an individual scientist. Outside of the classroom, she is involved with the fashion magazine on campus, the International Affairs Association, a pre-healthcare fraternity, and a science experiment project in an underprivileged Philadelphia high school. She also enjoys working as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in her spare hours. Lana is excited to continue pursuing a future in science and is currently working on her own independent research project within her lab.
A fun fact about our winner, standing at 5’2", Lana is a second-degree black belt. She always wanted to be able to defend herself and, for her, taekwondo was the answer. Lana says, "It also taught me so many things about teamwork, courage, discipline, and integrity. Most importantly, it taught me how to be physically and mentally tough."
"I am extremely grateful to everyone at LabRoots for this award. It is generous people like this that remind me why I have decided to go into healthcare."
The merit-based scholarship will fund Miss Waite for one year, providing $3,000 in direct costs. LabRoots supports undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Our scholarship program is open to students both in, and outside the US; there are no geographical limits for applicants. LabRoots wishes to encourage all students to stay in science and aims to help students work towards their research and educational goals.
