Congratulations to the LabRoots’ 2020 Fall Scholarship Winner!

The LabRoots’ 2020 Fall Scholarship welcomed applications from students around the world, seeking support for research projects, travel expenses, and training supplies associated with their academic pursuits in one of the STEM fields. We would like to congratulate Martina Miranda as this Fall's scholarship winner!

Martina Miranda is a junior majoring in Biology with an emphasis in Pre-medicine at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. She loves to read science non-fiction (currently reading Godel, Escher, and Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid) and poetry, take pictures digitally and on film, and volunteer to tutor refugee children in her free time. This summer, she was a TGen Virtual Helios Scholar getting closer to her goal of becoming a research scientist. Endlessly curious and indefatigable, she has sought out a career in biology for its open avenues for finding answers.

A fun fact about Martina is that she is well-versed in writing poetry. Her favorite poet is Persian poet Kaveh Akbar, whose poetry holds a special place in her heart, as a third-culture Filipina who lived in Dubai and therefore has a background in Arabic.

It is because of these opportunities that I can pursue my goals of being a geneticist and give back to not only my community here in the United States but also have my efforts extend to elevating the quality of STEM education in my home country."

The merit-based scholarship will fund Ms. Miranda for one year, providing $2,000 in direct costs. LabRoots supports undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Our scholarship program is open to students both in, and outside the US; there are no geographical limits for applicants. LabRoots wishes to encourage all students to stay in science and aims to help students work towards their research and educational goals.
