Congratulations to the LabRoots’ 2020 Spring Scholarship Winner!

The LabRoots’ 2020 Spring Scholarship welcomed applications from students around the world, seeking support for research projects, travel expenses, and training supplies associated with their academic pursuits in one of the STEM fields. We would like to congratulate Warren McCarthy as this Spring's scholarship winner!

Warren McCarthy is a freshman at the University of Utah, where he serves as an Ambassador for the College of Science. Upon beginning his college career, Warren commenced performing DNA research in the areas of rheumatology and gastroenterology and is the Principal Editor of the upcoming paper entitled “Superantigen triggering of autoimmune arthritis is mediated by the activation of ICOS-Th17” by Yi Yu et al. Warren also spends at least one day per week in the operating room at the University of Utah medical center as an endoscopy technician. In the future, Warren hopes to complete a combined M.D./Ph.D. program with a research-focused surgical practice.

A fun fact about Warren, when home, he enjoys baking including key lime cheesecakes and the occasional festive array of macarons.

I would like to express my utmost gratitude to the LabRoots Scholarship board for advocating for my success. I intend to use this very generous scholarship to continue my academic pursuits with aims toward becoming an M.D. PhD in the field of orthopedic surgery. The merit-based scholarship will fund Mr. McCarthy for one year, providing $2,000 in direct costs. LabRoots supports undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Our scholarship program is open to students both in, and outside the US; there are no geographical limits for applicants. LabRoots wishes to encourage all students to stay in science and aims to help students work towards their research and educational goals.
